The winners of the 2015 ECU Alumni Scholarship Classic were the “Old Pros,” consisting of teammates Brian Edgerton, Stephen Latham ’13, Eric Miller, and David Watkins.
Two full flights of golfers battled rainy weather on September 25 at Ironwood Golf and Country Club. The tournament, hosted by the East Carolina Alumni Association and by sponsored by Hilton Greenville and PotashCorp Aurora, supports the Alumni Scholarship program. Proceeds are still being calculated.
The “Old Pros” play regularly at Ironwood and have participated in the golf tournament several times before, placing second in 2014. With this year’s win, they qualified to play in the Acura College Alumni Team Championship at legendary Pinehurst later this fall.
“It was a great feeling to win, especially with the bad weather. It’s also great knowing I get to go back to Pinehurst with a great group of friends,” Edgerton said. “This is my fifth time playing in the alumni golf tournament and it has been a great time each year.”
“To be honest, it was a tough day dealing with all of the rain. However, we took the forecast to our advantage and made the best of it,” said Latham. “Placing second last year was a stinger for quite some time. It felt great for us to get the win and be able to go to Pinehurst and represent East Carolina University.”
Edgerton, Latham, and their teammates wanted to participate in the tournament so they could support ECU and help current students.
“I feel like it is very important for alumni to support ECU in any kind of way possible. I’m all about giving back and supporting my alma mater,” said Latham, who earned his degree in public health studies in 2013. He is currently a senior account manager for American Red Cross Blood Services.
“It is very important for those of us that can help to be as involved as possible with helping others follow their academic dreams,” said Edgerton, a business sales executive with US Cellular. He recently returned to school to complete his degree in 2019. Edgerton also volunteers as a strength coach for ECU Coed Cheer, and as a volunteer coach with Barton College Golf.
Thanks to all the teams who participated in the ECU Alumni Scholarship Classic and to all our sponsors.
